(KSL News) Dixie State College is one step closer to becoming an extension of the University of Utah.
Dixie's board of trustees voted today to petition the "U" for a closer affiliation. Under the plan Dixie State would change its name to the University of Utah-St. George. The college would be referred to as the "Dixie Campus."
The University of Utah's Board of Trustees meet next week to consider the proposal. If they agree, the proposal goes to the Board of Regents then the State Legislature.
Dixie State administrators also say if the deal goes through they will drop the "Rebels" nickname. The nickname is linked with the Confederate flag, and one trustee said "We don't want the past to limit the future."
