PROVO, Utah (June 14, 2007) -- BYU men's basketball coach Dave Rose today announced the hiring of Terry Nashif as an assistant men's basketball coach.
A former BYU point guard, Nashif has served the past two seasons on Rose's staff as the Cougars' director of basketball operations. He will fill the assistant coaching position vacated by Walter Roese, who was hired as an assistant at the University of San Diego.
Nashif joins current BYU assistant coaches Dave Rice and John Wardenburg on Rose's staff.
"I'm extremely confident in Terry's abilities," said Rose. "He has great knowledge of the game and is familiar with the needs of the players. Terry is a leader and hard worker who has a real commitment to BYU and the game of basketball. He will complement very well the coaching expertise and experience John and Dave give us."
A native of Vancouver, Wash., Nashif first came to BYU in 2001 as a walk-on point guard and eventually earned a scholarship. A smart floor leader, Nashif appeared in 103 games for the Cougars, including 14 starts, as a member of two NCAA Tournament teams. As a sophomore in 2002-03, Nashif helped the Cougars claim a share of the Mountain West Conference regular-season title by ranking first among MWC players in assist/turnover ratio during league games. That season he played in every game, including six starts, and led BYU in assists (3.0). During his senior campaign in 2004-05, Nashif achieved a career-high eight rebounds against California and dished out a career-best 10 assists at USC.
"This is a great opportunity for me to be a part of one of the best coaching staffs in the nation while continuing to contribute to the success of BYU basketball," Nashif said. "I have great respect for Coach Rose, Coach Rice and Coach Wardenburg. I look forward to the opportunity to work alongside them."
Nashif, 26, graduated from BYU in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Columbia, S.C. from 1999-2001. He and his wife Katie have one daughter, Macie.
The Cougars just completed one of the best seasons in the program's 105-year history, culminating in BYU's first outright league title since 1988 and its 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance with a 25-9 overall record. The team also racked up its first national top-25 ranking since 1993, its first final national ranking since 1988 and its first season sweep over rival Utah since 1994. On the record books at BYU, only two teams (1951 -- 28 wins; 1988 -- 26 wins) won more games in a season than the 25 victories achieved by the Cougars in 2006-07.
