UMBC upsets Stony Brook, 65-52; faces New Hampshire Saturday

BALTIMORE (AP) — Jairus Lyles and Joe Sherburne each scored 13 points and Maryland-Baltimore County posted a wire-to-wire win over Stony Brook in an America East Conference battle Wednesday night.

Stony Brook (17-11, 12-3) already clinched the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament. UMBC (18-10, 9-6) remains tied with New Hampshire for the No. 3 seed and the teams meet Saturday in the regular season finale.

UMBC got off to a fast start, taking a 9-0 lead and extending it into a 36-21 halftime advantage.

Akwasi Yeboah got the Seawolves within five points, 41-36 with 12 minutes to play by drilling back-to-back 3-pointers. Arkel Lamar answered with back-to-back treys for UMBC to make it 47-36 a minute later.

Yeboah got Stony Brook within three, 49-46, with under seven minutes left, but the Retrievers went on a 9-0 run to get back to a double-digit lead they maintained the rest of the way.

Roland Nyama scored 22 points for Stony Brook.
