Toledo sends Detroit Mercy to eighth straight loss

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Jonathan Williams scored a career-high 29 points and Toledo seized control in the final two-plus minutes to beat the University of Detroit Mercy 73-65 on Wednesday night.

Toledo led just 65-63 with 2:11 to play, but the Rockets scored the game's next five points for a 70-63 lead with 1:50 to go. All five came at the free throw line. Williams the first, followed by a pair each from Steve Taylor Jr. and Jaelan Sanford.

After a DeShawndre Black free throw for Detroit cut it to 70-64, the Rockets added two more from the line for an eight point lead which put the game away.

Jaelan Sanford scored 18 points and Steve Taylor Jr. added 10 for the Rockets (4-5), which shot 36 free throws overall.

Chris Jenkins led Detroit (1-8) with 15 points and 14 rebounds. The Titans have lost eight in a row and all six on the road.
