HONOLULU -- Aloha 100 Wins!
In just four years and four games BYU Head Coach Dave Rose has reached 100 wins faster than any other coach in BYU Basketball history.
"I'm really happy. I wanted to get this last year; get it out of the way, thought we might make a little run in the postseason, but I'm happy that after a tough summer I'm actually able to get back out here and getting to 3-0 is the best part.
BYU's Rose gets 100th victory with rout of HawaiiBYU cruised past Hawaii to get win number 100 for Head Coach Dave Rose Friday night, and did it in impressive fashion, winning 81-63.
"I watched Syracuse's Jim Boeheim get his 800th win, you think about a hundred wins and you wonder how would you get 800 wins," Rose asked rhetorically.
"He's the best. He's the reason I came to BYU," said senior forward Jonathan Tavernari.
Rose is now 100-34 (.746) over four-plus seasons.
Friday night will also long be remembered as the night former two-time Utah high school Mr. Basketball, Tyler Haws made his first start for the Cougars. He chipped in with 12 points in 25 minutes to help the Cougars to the 83-65 win against Hawaii in Honolulu.
Coach Rose felt it was time to put Haws into the starting lineup to give the Cougars a little more offense to start the game and the coach was right.
"I thought Tyler did a good job defensively too, in a tough matchup. (Roderick) Flemings (the current WAC Player of the Week) is a big, tough physical guy and I thought Ty responded really well. He played 25 really good, strong minutes for us. I hope it gives him confidence because I think he's going to be a big part of the success of this team."
Fellow former Lone Peak Knight Emery Jackson added 11 points and the defensive play of the early season when he swatted away a dunk attempt by Flemings near the end the first half. No surprise says Tavernari.
"Jax is the ultimate team guy. He prepares so well, loves to defend, sacrifices his body any time, all the time."
Rose's Cougars got early energy from their bench, pushed out to an 11 point lead, then when Hawaii cut BYU's 10 point halftime advantage in half in the first few minutes of the second half to a mere five, Jimmer Fredette led an 11-0 Cougar run that put the Rainbow Warriors to bed.
Fredette led BYU with 20 pts on 9-14 shooting and dished off eight assists. Tavernari broke out of an early season funk scoring 17 pts on 7-14 shooting. BYU's bench also scored 23 points combined and the Cougars ferocious team defense forced 20 Hawaii turnovers.
Cougars fly home Saturday then won't leave the state again until mid-December.
Next up, BYU returns to the Marriott Center to host Southern University on Tuesday, followed by Randy Rahe's Weber State Wildcats on Friday in Provo. Then on Wednesday, December 2 the always entertaining and tense trip to the Spectrum in Logan to test Stew Morrill's Utah State Aggies.
