HONOLULU -- The BYU men's basketball team is hoping to reach an important milestone in its game against Hawaii (2-1) Friday.
Head coach Dave Rose is on track to win his 100th game faster than any coach in BYU history. Although this achievement would be a very impressive one for Rose, his players are the ones who expressed the importance of making it happen.
"It's a big game. We've got to go out there and win," said Jackson Emery of the Cougars' trip to Hawaii. "Rumor has it, it's coach's 100th win if we win that one, so it's a big one for him and a big one for this program."
The game in and of itself will provide a tough test for the Cougars (2-0) as they take the long flight to Hawaii and play a late game which will most likely end after midnight after a 10:00 tip. Rose said the return trip will have a greater effect on the team than the trip to Hawaii.
"I worry a little bit more about coming back than going over there," Rose said. "It's a late game in your time zone, and we've got Sunday and Monday to recover, then we've got a game on Tuesday. It's a big trip for us, and we're excited to go over there and play a good Hawaii team."
The Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii hosted the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic as part of the ESPN College Hoops Tipoff Marathon, finishing 2-1 with wins over Southern Utah (1-2) and McNeese State (0-3), before falling to Northern Colorado (3-0) in the championship game 81-75.
BYU leads the all time series 30-13, winning the last meeting 81-68 at the Marriott Center in February of 1999. Both teams were members of the WAC at the time.
Dwain Williams, a transfer from Providence, leads the Rainbow Warriors in scoring with 17.7 points per game. The Warriors are looking to improve from a 13-17 record last season. The pieces may be in place for that to happen, after losing only one starter from last year's squad. The Warriors, led by third year coach Bob Nash (26-37), struggled offensively last season, averaging only 64 points per game. They seem to have improved somewhat this year, bumping their average to 71 points per game thus far.
