I agree she should be punished for her actions, but BYU's not completely innocent on this. It looked to me like the BYU girls knew she would retaliate if they got under her skin.(I watched it in slowmo on DVR a few times) On the ponytail takedown the BYU player was grabbing and was holding her jersey until she was thrown to the ground. And you could see she was jabbed in the ribs (or bewb) by the BYU player right before she punched her in the back.

I totally agree. Her reactions were unsportsmanlike, out of control, and uncalled for. You kind of have to treat an irrational person like a land mine; If you mess with one for too long, you might get blown up.

@cdub - It's so simple. The NM girl (?) thought she was a roller derby gal.....DUH. Personally I like girls that pull each other's hair. Good for ratings!
Jersey pulling and little cheap shots are a part of soccer. Have you ever watched a game?
This woman from New Mexico was plain flat out trying to hurt her. That is not part of the game. Getting under your opponents skin is part of the game. It's a mental strategy used in every sport ever played.
Your post is one of the lamest posts i think i've ever read.
I agree with you - cheap shots are a part of soccer. Getting under your opponents skin is part of the game. She was and should be suspended for her irrational actions. What we all need to realize is that retaliation is a strategy used by irrational people when someone gets under their skin.

@cdub - I really don't see how you can equate tugging, pushing, jabbing, grabbing, or anything else that BYU did with a blatant kidney punch/elbow or grabbing the ponytail and throwing her to the ground.
Yes, Soccer is a rough sport BUT when you intentionally inflict serious bodily harm onto another player you should be ejected. And yes, she could have very easily bruised a kidney (why do you think boxers are warmed for kidney punches) or gotten a concussion for hitting the ground the way she did.
@cdub - holy cow just in the in the video alone that is some dirty play by NM. The refs may have missed it but the NCAA won't, I'm sure some sort of punishment is coming.
@cdub - I took my daughter to this game because she has just finished her first season of competitive club soccer and I think she needs to develop a little more agressiveness to succeed at a higher level. I thought seeing a college game might help her get a feel for the agressive nature of the game at the higher levels. I got way more than I bargined for! It was a fun game to watch, but Lambert's actions were inexcusable. I'm glad they suspended her. If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. She obviously couldn't handle the heat so they've kicked her out of the kitchen. When I play competitive sports, I love getting in my opponent's head and taking them out of their game. BYU did a great job of this and I think Carlee's gesture toward the clock was masterful. She didn't back down one bit when faced by rough and cheap play.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I'm not a coward I've just never been tested. I'd like to think that if I was I would pass.
@cdub - Any person knows that the heat of competition can make you want do something you should not. The difference comes in knowing how to resist the urge to do something stupid, and even dangerous, and exercising self-control. No one can bait you into doing something wrong and stupid if you have strength of character in the first place.
@cdub - Soccer is a contact sport. But what this out of control feline did was assault. The one that was most offensive was when she clothelined a byu player after kicking the ball.
Then, post game she claims her action weren't a reflection of her real character. That she was just caught up in the game and let her emotions get the best of her.
WRONG!!! The way you behave under stress brings out your real character. What we saw on the field was the real Lez Lambert.
Did anybody else find the NM athletic director's claim that "Liz is a quality athlete" to be a bit unrepentant? I'm sorry, you backwater third world school, but "quality athletes" don't behave this way.
@cdub - Watch any...any sporting event, basketball, football, hockey, lacrosse pick your poison, grabbing uniforms and little jabs are a part of just about every contact sport. Throwing someone to the ground...UFC maybe? Before you say it, non-BYU fan.
She actually said that her behavior wasn't reflective of her character?! If it had been a single jab I might have believed her, but her pattern of assaults tells me that her behavior was EXACTLY reflective of her character.
Not only is she a bad sport, but she's a dishonest one as well.
@Brent A. - Taking it one step further, she was caught on tape. I think her apology is a nice one taken at face value. But she must dig herself out of a huge hole to get her character back after this.
Yes, soccer is a contact sport and involves a degree of bumping and jostling and even aggressive play. But this girl took it WAY beyond that. She played downright dirty. Too bad, because her momma can't be proud of that.
@FamProc's Mom - I think the Utah Jazz should sign her to a contract. They need an "enforcer" in the paint. She certainly seems capable of being rough when the opposition comes near the basket...
@cdub - urban meyer would probably say - well we need our top players to beat all these crappy teams this year cause our team just BLOWS.
without our top players, we might lose to these HORRIBLE teams - so you only get a half game suspension - and in the locker room every player gets to whip you with a towel once on the bottom.
I'm no BYU fan, but what this girl did was extremely unsportsmanlike. I seriously doubt this was an isolated incident, and is exactly indicative of her character. Maybe the BYU players were getting under her skin, but everyone knows you don't let that kind of stuff get to you. You don't retaliate like that in sports. Just another example of how sports builds character. Hey Liz, go join a roller derby squad!
@C M. - How the heck would you know that this is indicative of her character? Do you know her on a personal level? Also did you watch the entire game? Because BYU was not exactly innocent either, talk about retaliating!
@skip21al - If they weren't looking directly at the player at the time of the foul, ref's aren't going to call it. Soccer is one of those sports that players flop all the time. A player laying on the ground isn't going to get a call.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I don't mind if you vote disagree, just tell me why.
@skip21al - A couple of the incidences happened at the ball. Surely the officials should have seen those assaults!
This may be another case of prejudice against BYU. I've seen it happen before. Not because of its association with the LDS church, but because they're the big, rich private school playing against smaller state schools.
Definitely should have been a red card. Definitely need an investigation.
@skip21al - What?! I'm guessing you are either some strange pervert or an uptight narrow minded LDS person...... Wait, is that judge mental? How does it feel?
@skip21al - Youre a moron lilmommie! You clearly dont have a clue what youre talking about! Every comment you have made has been rediculous. First, yes Liz' game play is indicative of her character. Why can we know that without actually knowing her? The answer is obvious but i'll spell it out for you. Constant physical criminal assaults that could be punished legaly from the start of the game till the end are a plain statement that this girl has no self discipline or she is naturally over aggresive. The fact that she gives a fake appology, kicks a ball into another players face while shes on the ground and then argues with the ref for getting a red card... Her attidude through the entire game is exactly who she is. If you try and argue against that for a second your an idiot. Well, you already have. Second, well funded private schools are commonly descriminated against but state schools. Youre clearly biased against either byu, the lds church or for UNM. Either way youve made a fool of yourself. Keep you moronic comments to yourself.
She is only "regretful" becuase she was caught. One cheap hit is a sign that you got caught up in the moment. Multiple cheap hits like she did is planned and intentional. It is a character flaw. Why else would you be on ESPN Sportscenter for a cheap shot in women's soccer?
Seems to me some BYU players ought to be suspended as well...pretty bad actions on their part and I thought BYU always hold their "kids" to a higher standard
@MrTroll - Can you explain what the behaviors were from BYU that would be cause for suspension? Pushing, shoving, jostling for position is all part of the game. Where is a kidney punch or throwing another player to the ground by their hair part of the game?
MrTroll, believe or not, this kind of thing goes on in any team sport at any level and at any age. This seems to be a normal part of "competition" these days. The reality is, there is a line, and she crossed it big time. You bet these BYU players were trying to get under her skin, and guess what? They did!
@Just Below Me - Maybe you can be the one to get her laid so she can act like a normal citizen again.

"This is in no way indicative of my character" I would have to say that this totally indicative of her character. The apology sounds like the same one that all athletes--and politicians--make when they get caught. Translation: "I am sorry I got caught and hope this apology will get me out of any consequences"
Lambert's apology sounds total PR - I doubt it came from her at all.
New Mexico coach Kit Vela's apology is hollow when she says "in this instance her actions clearly crossed the line of fair play and good sportsmanship" AFTER the game is over. Lambert should have been sent to the locker room and told to find her own ride home RIGHT WHEN IT HAPPENED if it was truly crossing the line in her eyes.
@Becky M. - Speaking of PR, after the game New Mexico issued a press release that said "The Lobos gave the defending champs all they could handle in a close match."
Yes, they gave BYU all they could handle, had to suspend a player because of it, and still lost the game.
Just watched the rebroadcast of this game and it was extremely remeniscent of Tonya Harding. Liz~ You don't think you can get it on your own merits, so take the cheapest shots you can.
Why did she get suspended indefinitely? Because she wasn't a football player. Urban Meyer's team captain jams his fingers in a players eyes while he's on the ground and gets suspended for a HALF! It's easy to make a statement with a sport that doesn't bring in as much money.
@Treetrunk - The indefinite suspension of a player who has completed her season is a joke. However, it is consistent from a coach who didn't pull Lambert despite repeated violence on the field.
It seems pretty clear that the plan here is to revoke the suspension as soon as the controversy blows over. Why else would there be an "indefinite" suspension from the school that suspended its head football coach for one game following an attack on an assistant coach?
From what I see in the video the BYU player elbowed the NM player in the diaphragm area hard first. NM retaliated with a punch in the back. The second incident happened after the BYU player grabed her shorts possibly hurting the NM player again. NM responded with the hair pull and throw to the ground. My point is if the BYU player did not behave the way she did the NM player would not have to respond to anything.
@Pat R - You're trying to tell me someone grabbing shorts has the potential of hurting them. This is how it is in soccer. There is jersey pulling and short pulling going on 90 out of 90 minutes in a soccer game. There are little elbows being thrown 90 out of 90 minutes in a soccer game.
There are not punches to the kidneys being thrown ever. There are not people being pulled down by there hair ever. This is the first time in 15 years that i've been an avid fan of soccer that i have ever seen anything like this in soccer.
@Pat R - JAKE M - Did you miss the Zidane headbutt? I think that is just as bad if not worse than this. You must not be too much of an avid fan of soccer.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I'm not a coward I've just never been tested. I'd like to think that if I was I would pass.
There is no justification for her behavior. She was simply a bully and there should be no place for people like her in sports. See the ESPN clip for a much more complete account of her entire game antics. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=4629837
@Pat R - What exactly did BYU do that deserved suspenssion? Please tell me! There wasnt anything. If you sespend every player who jostles, elbows, pushes you will suspend every player in every teamin the nation. So tell me, what did BYU do that deserved to suspend a player.
The Amazon from New Mexico was totally crowding her (probably had stank breath as well) and she got a little elbow bump (WHICH OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T HURT HER)and she apparently lost her mind. She even broke UFC rules in kicking a downed opponent in the face (which you see if you watch the ESPN footage of this) One little hit or push can be explained easily as a loss of temper. This troll's actions were OBVIOUSLY calculated and consistent throughout the match. She should be kicked off the team and banned from NCAA play. Nice apology...I'm sure it wasn't forced AT ALL
Who wants to bet her dad is THAT guy yelling crap from the stands at every match???
See you in the Pakistani Womens Prison Soccer League!!!
@Mike D. - screw that you guys - maggie IS TOUGH - you could make a pony tail from her pubic hair and yank it - you're only gonna see a smile from her face.
IN a tug of war match using her pubic hair against the ENTIRE BYU team - i'd put my money on her.
If you watched some of the other things she did during the game, it was unreal. This girl should be charged with assault. If she is on schlorship it should be over. And the soccer coach should be gone too. I am sure this is not the first time this has happened. What a nice canned apology, ya she is sorry, sorry it was caught on film. Her parents must be proud. What a loser!!!
I have played in really physical games, but nothing like that. There is no excuse for the way she played and she deserves to be punished for the way she played. That was poor sportsmanship all around. The sad thing is that is what she is going to be remembered for.
carnivorous, I think people are forgetting the actual outcome - BYU - 1, NM - 0. Looks like the cats got the last laugh. Honestly though, those are some tough chicks!
The girl is weak. She totally lost it and I'm glad she got exposed for it.
Comparing this to Brandon spikes is really stupid though. He put his hands in ealey's helmet and that was it. Ealey issued a statment saying that he didn't touch his eyes and he felt that spikes shouldn't have been suspended at all.
@Mike D. - yep - lets just have every race, religion and gender go to war with each other until the strongest one wins -
although with gender winning - one way or another that'd just screw humans out of a future - which come to think of it - doesn't sound too far off from what's already happening sooo... BRING IT THEIST BLACK WOMEN!!!
Well, I was actually the first to comment on this, I said that the BYU girls should've been penalized as well and of course the mods took it off. Isn't it funny how comments like that or anything against BYU in the least are either hidden , or trolled? What a one sided, narrow minded state we live in- go momos
@lilmommie - Actually I agree with you lilmommie and your first post...watching the video over and over it looks like the blonde was first to elbow the girl in the stomach..and then the girl lost her cool, and i'm not supporting at all what she did. She totally lost it and should be suspended..also on the hair pull the BYU player was yanking on her shorts keeping her pinned on her back. So like you said those BYU players really are not angels in this situation.
Sadly this board is moderated and owned by the church (KSL) so it might as well be BYU moderating this since they own that too so not totally surprised they removed it. There a BYU protest video on Youtube you should check out, BYU students learning they can't even protest on their own college campus lol. Pretty sad really.
@lilmommie - Probably need to look again lilmommie - I doubt the accused "mods" removed anything -- well can't be sure but I read all of your lopsided comments and it was very clear from what I read above, and what you repeated here, that you think BYU should have been penalized. And, as readers and writers on this space, we each have the right to agree (ditto) or disagree (troll) with you. By the way, I don't live in your state but I find most of your position quote closed minded.
@lilmommie - Lilmommie youre a joke. You are as closed-minded if not more so than anyone you are hating against here. If you see the video from another angle on the elbow in the stomach to kidney shot (yeah thats fair retaliation) you'll see that the UNM girl was pinching her in the back or something to that sort which the byu player responded to. If you hate Mormons ( and yes its mormons not mormans) so much why dont you leave? We colonized the state and own the board youre posting on. Take your hypocrytical biased hate somewhere else!
Wow "Squirrel hater" you don't have some anger issues of your own do you? And by the way, I know how this comment board works- I'm a big girl. And yes I do feel that BYU should have been penalized and I have had many people agree with me. You said yourself that as readers on this space, we have the right to agree or disagree with other people- does that not include me? Also, it appears that you are unsure of what the term "mods" means, let me clear that up for you ok? It is an abbreviation for the word MODERATORS.
Thank you so much hondadrift, I really do appreciate it :) You see you just proved my point for me! MorMONS are rude, self centered, hateful, spiteful people! Thanks to your awesome message everyone will know just exactly what I was trying to make a point about :) Although I was only referring to the game, you're the one who got all personal about it. And by the way, I converted to "the church" a few years ago and it was your exact attitude that they all have that turned me right back away, I feel that it is important for anyone who is considering converting to know the truth- so again thank you so very much for helping me spread it! You rock!
@lilmommie - This is quite entertaining since everything you accused Mormons of doing and being, you have displayed yourself here on this one board alone. No comment of yours i replied to were you only talking about the game. You made it personal from the start. I however do apologize for calling you a moron. Its easy to get upset on here. You find what you want to find in everyone. If you think all of Utah is self centered, hateful, rude and spiteful then you can go anywhere in the world and find those same people.
This isn't indicative of her character? She really believes that?? It seems to me like what we do in the heat of the moment is the only thing that shows what are character really is.
This girl has no class. She should be removed from NCAA athletics. Let her finish her degree, but she shouldn't be allowed back on the field.
