Anson Winder came to the BYU campus last year from Las Vegas to begin a career full of potential, but this season has brought a slight tweak to expectations.
The young guard brought a positive energy to the BYU lineup during the 2011-12 season. The freshman earned playing time by contributing energy and toughness on defense and gradually became more comfortable running the offense as the season progressed. With teammate Matt Carlino ineligible to play at the beginning of the season, Winder played out of position in earning the starting nod at point guard in a few games.
This season, however, Winder is starting out by suiting up in a shirt and a tie. Sidelined by a sore ankle, Winder has been on the bench for the first two preseason games.
"He (Winder) had X-rays the other day," coach Dave Rose said after the game. "He sprained his ankle during the first or second week of school, and it's been really sore.
"The doctors think he has a small tear in the ligament that connects to his ankle," Rose added. "It started to feel better, then he practiced in the first eight practices or so, and it kind of blew up, not swelling, but it was just sore."
In Winder's absence, BYU's guard line remains deep and in good shape, with freshman Cory Calvert joining fellow newcomer Raul Delgado in boosting Rose's backcourt numbers.
Calvert comes to the team after a successful high school career in Colorado, earning first-team state honors and helping his team win the 5A state title. He averaged 22.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists during his senior year.
Operating as a backup for Carlino at the point, Calvert was solid in the Cougar Tipoff and exhibition opener, averaging 4.5 assists per game, good for second highest on the team. He is also taking care of the ball, with three turnovers in the two games.
