It is a rather stunning figure when you think about it - since the 1960's more than a hundred murders in Salt Lake City have gone unresolved. People, literally, are getting away with murder.
The city's police department is concerned about it. They should be. In fact, everyone in the community should be deeply concerned about it. Murderers are walking the streets. Moreover, dozens of victims' families are living with the uncertainty of what happened to their loved ones.
That is why the community should welcome and support the police department's latest initiative to solve so-called "cold cases." The department plans to feature a different cold case every couple of months with the realistic hope, we think, of getting new leads. There will be news stories, and the case will be reviewed on the department's website at http://www.slcpd.com.
The first victim featured is Hipolito Casiano Mateos who was gunned down outside his home seven years ago as he was leaving for work. By reminding the public what happened to Mateos and offering a reward, police and family members are hopeful there'll be a break in the case.
KSL finds it an interesting approach to a troubling problem. A hundred unresolved murders is a disturbing blemish on Utah's capital city.
