The Jordan River is one of Northern Utah's most important natural assets. The unique 44-mile waterway demands respectful attention and should not be neglected or ignored.
That's why it is encouraging to learn that government entities along the vital waterway will soon come together under the umbrella of the Envision Utah process to update the community's vision for the river. While various municipalities and groups have done much in recent years to improve this significant resource, it has been at least 35 years since a coordinated effort has been undertaken.
It doesn't require much imagination or scientific knowledge to know that in prehistoric times, the Jordan River must have been a wondrous corridor of natural abundance. Early pioneer accounts refer to a clear, meandering stream filled with four-pound trout. Then came civilization and generations of neglect and abuse. Even today portions of the river are so polluted fish cannot survive.
It must not continue!
With broad community support KSL is confident Envision Utah's coordinated focus on the Jordan River will lead to renewed commitment to the river's potential. While its primitive grandeur may never be recovered, the Jordan River still can be a lifeline of riparian and avian abundance, as well as an impressive aesthetic and recreational resource for future generations of urbanites.
