WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Post reports that Russia's ambassador to the U.S. has told his superiors that he and Jared Kushner discussed setting up a secret communications channel between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin in December. Kushner is Donald Trump's son-in-law and a trusted adviser to the president. The newspaper says Ambassador Sergei Kislyak told his superiors that Kushner proposed using Russian diplomatic facilities for their discussions, apparently to make them difficult to monitor.

TAORMINA, Italy (AP) — President Donald Trump is blaming "evil organizations of terror" and a "thuggish ideology" for an attack on Coptic Christians in Egypt that killed at least 28 people, including children. In a strongly worded statement, Trump refers to the "merciless slaughter of Christians" and says a "wound is inflicted upon humanity" every time innocent blood is spilled.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Zbigniew Brzezinski (ZBIG'-nyef breh-ZHIN'-skee), the national security adviser to President Jimmy Carter, has died. He was 89. His death was announced on social media Friday night by his daughter, MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski. Brzezinski helped topple economic barriers between the Soviet Union, China and the West. And he helped Carter bridge wide gaps between the rigid Egyptian and Israeli leaders, Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin, leading to the Camp David accords.

CAIRO (AP) — Senior officials say Egyptian fighter jets have struck militant bases in eastern Libya in retaliation for an attack by suspected Islamic State militants that killed 28 Christians south of Cairo. The officials said the warplanes on Friday targeted the headquarters of the Shura Council in the city of Darna, where local militias are known to be linked to al-Qaida, not the Islamic State.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon is thinking about a potential North Korean threat and working on preparations. The U.S. has scheduled a missile defense test for next week that will target an intercontinental-range missile for the first time. The importance of such testing has grown with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's threats to field a nuclear-armed missile capable of reaching American territory.
