BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Anti-corruption prosecutors seeking to thwart possible plans to tamper with upcoming local elections in Romania have carried out searches in homes and public institutions.

Prosecutors said they had searched two institutions and homes in Bucharest and five towns near the capital on Friday on suspicion of attempts to falsify voter lists ahead of nationwide local elections on June 5.

Romania's local administrations are notorious for being plagued by corruption. Sorin Oprescu resigned as mayor of all Bucharest in September amid a bribe probe. Five out of the six district mayors of the capital have been arrested or are being probed on corruption charges.

On the eve of the campaign, President Klaus Iohannis urged voters to elect candidates who were not being investigated for wrongdoing.
