The Obama administration has issued a strong condemnation of Palestinian incitement and assaults against Israeli civilians and soldiers after a particular bloody day of violence.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday "the U.S. condemns in the strongest possible terms the terrorist attacks, the recent terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians which resulted in the murder of three Israelis and left numerous others wounded." He said the U.S. stresses the "importance of condemning violence and combating incitement."

Earnest added that the administration is "deeply concerned" about the escalating violence and urges all sides to restore calm.

Earlier Wednesday, a pair of Palestinian stabbing and shooting attacks in Jerusalem killed three Israelis. Some eight Israelis and 28 Palestinians have died in a month of Israeli-Palestinian unrest.

The Palestinian Health Ministry says a Palestinian man has been killed by Israeli fire during a protest in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

Israel's prime minister says his government is working on a series of "aggressive steps" in response to a wave of Palestinian attacks.

Benjamin Netanyahu made the announcement in a speech to parliament. He left a gathering of senior security officials to give the speech, then returned to the security discussions.

"We will use and not hesitate to use all means at our disposal to restore calm," he said. "I'm sure the steps we will take will let the other side know that terror doesn't pay."

Israeli police say a Jewish Israeli man stabbed another Jew in northern Israel in a suspected failed revenge attack.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld initially called Tuesday's stabbing near the IKEA store in Kiryat Ata a criminally motivated attack. Later, police said they concluded the man was hoping to stab an Arab in revenge for a wave of violent attacks against Jews that has spread across Israel.

However, he attacked another Israeli Jew whom he thought was an Arab because of his Middle Eastern appearance.

The 22-year-old victim was moderately wounded.

Earlier in the day, a pair of separate Palestinian stabbing and shooting attacks in Jerusalem killed three Israelis. Coupled with another two stabbing attacks in the central Israeli city of Raanana that injured five, the day marked a dramatic escalation of the monthlong wave of violence.

The Israeli military says hundreds of Palestinian protesters in Gaza have gathered near the Israeli border and are throwing stones and burning tires toward Israeli positions.

The army says it is using "riot dispersal means" against the crowd.

Palestinian medics say five people have been wounded Tuesday by Israeli gunfire, two of them seriously.

A wave of violence in Israel and the West Bank has spread to Gaza in recent days, with Palestinians staging protests along the border.

Over the weekend, nine Palestinians in Gaza, including a mother and her 2-year-old child, were killed in Israeli-Palestinian violence.

Israeli police say the death toll from a pair of separate stabbing and shooting attacks in Jerusalem has risen to three.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says one of those seriously injured when two Palestinian men boarded a bus in Jerusalem and began shooting and stabbing passengers has succumbed to his wounds. A 60-year-old man was also killed, as was one of the attackers.

In a separate, near-simultaneous attack, another assailant rammed a car into a bus station before stabbing bystanders. Police said one Israeli was killed.
