COTONOU, Benin (AP) — Relatives say a businessman once accused of trying to have Benin's president poisoned has returned to the West African country after several years of self-imposed exile.
Patrice Talon arrived Thursday in Benin aboard a commercial flight, his cousin Johannes Dagnon told The Associated Press.
Talon had been living in France since October 2012 after he also was accused of plotting a coup to oust President Boni Yayi, a claim Talon has called "extremely ludicrous."
In an interview recently broadcast on two television stations in Benin, Talon said he was thinking about running in the next presidential election in February 2016.
Along with Talon, authorities arrested Yayi's personal doctor, a niece and a former government minister in connection with the alleged poisoning plot. All three were later released.
