BEIRUT (AP) — The Islamic State group is acknowledging casualties after aircraft from of the U.S.-led coalition unleashed a series of airstrikes targeting the group's de facto capital of Raqqa in eastern Syria.

The coalition says it carried out 18 airstrikes throughout Raqqa province, destroying a number of IS vehicles and 16 bridges. A coalition spokesman says the strikes were intended to deny IS "the ability to move military capabilities throughout Syria and into Iraq."

A militant website says 10 people were killed and dozens of others wounded. An IS-affiliated Facebook page says one civilian was among those killed and the wounded included women and children.

An anti-IS activist network in Raqqa says the airstrikes killed eight civilians, including a 10-year-old child.

Meanwhile, IS suicide bombers detonated an explosives-laden truck near a power plant in the remote northeastern city of Hassakeh. Fighting has raged there in recent days, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee.

And in Iraq, the Defense Ministry says government forces repelled an IS attack this morning on the town of Haditha and the nearby Haditha dam in Anbar province.
