LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria's federal high court is ordering drug agents to release a newly-elected senator, and suspend his extradition proceedings. The judge said there shouldn't be any action against the senator until a court ruling Wednesday on a suit he filed to block his extradition.
And he's ordered the country's attorney general and the head of Nigeria's Drug Law Enforcement Agency to appear in court by noon tomorrow to show why they shouldn't be charged with contempt of court.
Nigeria says the United States is seeking the senator's extradition. The State Department isn't commenting.
The senator, Buruji Kashamu (kah-SHAH'-moo), is suspected in a drug case that dates back 20 years. Among those who pleaded guilty in the case was Piper Kerman, an American woman whose memoir about her time in jail was turned into the TV hit "Orange is the New Black."
