BERLIN (AP) — German federal prosecutors say they have charged a German-Moroccan dual citizen with membership in a terrorist organization on allegations he went to Syria to train and fight with an al-Qaida linked group.
Prosecutors said in a statement Monday that Soufiane K., whose last name wasn't released in line with privacy regulations, traveled from his hometown of Ruesselsheim, near Frankfurt, to Syria through Turkey in July 2013. They say the 28-year-old man joined the Nusra Front, also known as Jabhat al-Nusra, by September of that year.
They say after weapons training he took part in a Nusra Front combat operation against Syrian President Bashar Assad's government, and also performed guard duty.
He returned to Germany last June and was arrested in October in Frankfurt and has been in custody since then.
