MEXICO CITY (AP) — A Mexican court has ordered alleged drug lord Servando Gomez to stand trial on drug and organized-crime charges.
The national Judiciary Council said late Wednesday the court had found enough evidence to warrant a trial of the alleged leader of the Knights Templar cartel on charges of trafficking in cocaine and marijuana.
Gomez was captured early Friday by federal police in western Michoacan state.
Gomez's cartel is a quasi-religious criminal group that once dominated the state, controlling politics and commerce.
He evaded capture for more than a year after the federal government took over the state to try to restore order.
