ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek journalists are on a 24-hour strike, pulling all newscasts off the air a day before a nationwide general strike against austerity measures.
Radio and television stations were not broadcasting any news bulletins Wednesday, and current affairs websites were not being updated from 6 a.m. No Thursday newspapers will be published.
Thursday's general strike is expected to disrupt services across the country. Schools will remain shut, state hospitals will only handle emergencies, and ferries and flights will not operate. Journalists' unions usually hold work stoppages a day early so reporters can cover the general strike.
Greece has been dependent on billions of euros in international bailouts since 2010. In return, successive governments have had to impose deep spending cuts and tax hikes in an effort to reform the economy.
