LIMA, Peru (AP) — Two gunmen shot and killed a journalist for Peru's leading newsmagazine who had been investigating contract killings in a province south of Lima.
Caretas magazine editors say the gunmen shot 22-year-old Fernando Raymondi in the chest on Sunday night in his father's small grocery in the town of Canete. They gunmen arrived on a motorcycle taxi and told a friend of the victim to scram.
Raymondi's editor at Caretas, Americo Zambrano, said it not yet known if the killing is related to Raymondi's probe of killings in Canete by gangs that have been extorting construction contractors along the coast.
Zambrano said Raymondi died en route to the hospital.
Raymondi is the second Peruvian journalist killed this year and at least the fourth slain in the past two years.
