KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A Ugandan police official says nine bodies have been discovered buried under four different sites in an ongoing investigation of mass graves in a western part of the country that had tribal violence recently.

Police Spokesman Fred Enanga said Friday that five of the victims were found in a grave in Bundibugyo district.

Local leaders say the victims are members of the Bakonzo tribe who were killed in reprisal attacks following violence in neighboring Kasese district, where the Bakonzo were blamed for deadly attacks on the Bamba earlier this month. On July 5 gunmen believed to be Bakonzo raided villages and security installations near Uganda's border with Congo, killing more than 12 people.

Ugandan security forces killed more than 50 trying to stop the attacks, President Yoweri Museveni said recently.
