ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A witness testifying against a Greek farm foreman on trial over a shotgun attack on protesting foreign strawberry pickers says the man had earlier killed two dogs in front of workers, threatening them with the same fate if they kept asking for their unpaid wages.
Last year's shootings wounded 28 men and highlighted the plight of foreign laborers who form the backbone of Greece's agricultural industry.
Bangladeshi strawberry picker Bokkr Apu told a court Thursday that the alleged dog shooting took place about a month before the attack on the workers near Manolada, 260 kilometers (160 miles) southwest of Athens. Three foremen are on trial, including the man accused of shooting dogs, as is the farm owner.
They are charged with human trafficking and grievous bodily harm.
