Shockers tie NCAA mark...Cavs fall...Lakers help Spurs...B's, Blues grab conference leads

Wichita State has become the second team in NCAA Division I men's basketball history to open a season with 34 straight wins, and the first since UNLV in 1990-91. The Shockers did it by winning the Missouri Valley Conference title game, downing Indiana State 83-69. Fred VanVleet scored 22 points for the Shockers, while tournament MVP Tekele Cotton drained four 3-points to finish with 20 points.

A brand new Associated Press men's basketball poll is out later today and based on last week's results the Florida Gators and Wichita State Shockers should remain 1-2. The Gators won both their games to improve to 29-2 while the Shockers won three games to win the Missouri Valley Conference tournament and increase their record to 34-0.

Florida and Wichita State, the top two teams in last week's AP men's basketball poll, have retained the same positions in the new poll. The 29-2 Gators got 50 of the 65 first-place votes while the second-ranked Shockers, who are unbeaten in 34 games, received the remaining 15 from the media panel. Rounding out the top five are Villanova, Arizona and Louisville.
