FDA Commissioner: budget cuts mean less safe food

Fewer food safety inspections and an increased risk to consumers will result from the lack of a new 2013 budget from Congress and the upcoming across-the-board spending cuts, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said Thursday.

Cleanup of radioactive waste at nuclear sites across the country _ including one in Washington state where waste tanks may be leaking 1,000 gallons per year _ would be delayed under automatic spending cuts set to take effect Friday.
