Richard Piatt joined the Eyewitness News team on April 15, 1998. Little did he know, he would soon be identified with covering Utah's political leaders and government for the station, a position he takes very seriously.
But his beat won't stop him from covering other things, too. Over his nearly 20 years in TV news, he has won awards for covering spot news, for investigative and special reports. He was nominated for two regional emmy awards; for reports he did on a serial killer in Indiana and Illinois; and for on going coverage of a woman who remembered--10 years after the fact--that her mother had killed her father. During those early years, he gained valuable experience covering police and courts at the beginning of his career.
Politics seems to be part of every job he's had. He's covered state capitols in Michigan, Indiana, Idaho and Utah. He's covered four presidents; interviewed Vice President Dan Quayle the day before he was nominated to take that position; and got Barbara Bush's attention for an exclusive interview during a Presidential trip to Grissom Air force base in Indiana.
"There's no better job for me", Richard said. "It's always something new, and I try to do stories that are clear and that people can relate to, no matter how complicated the subject or how seemingly mundane the topic."
Richard also fills in at the anchor desk frequently, which he also enjoys. "I think viewers appreciate a reporter who anchors, and vice-versa. It's a chance to show a range of ability as a broadcaster. And I'm always finding ways to communicate more clearly."
On his down-time, Richard loves everything Utah has to offer. Skiing in the winter, hiking and biking in the summer.
"Quality of life is very important to me. That's why I'm pleased to have stayed as long as I have at KSL 5."
