ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A 17-year-old boy was airlifted to a Salt Lake City hospital after he was shocked and burned by equipment he was using in an industrial shop class.

The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/2mQ3V6O ) that the teen was attending class at Snow Canyon High School in St. George on Tuesday burning designs into wood with an electrical current when he was injured.

St. George police officer Lona Trombley says the boy had used the equipment before, but this time he failed to use a surge protector.

The boy's hands were burned and he fell to the ground, where cables fell on his chest and shocked him for more than a minute.

Trombley says the boy was responsive and talking with officers before he was taken to the hospital.
