NEW YORK (AP) — Two men have been arrested on drug charges after heroin was found hidden in the false bottom of a dog crate containing a Labrador retriever that had been shipped from Puerto Rico to New York.
The defendants have been identified as 35-year-old Samuel Seabrooks, of the Bronx, and 27-year-old Carlos Betancourt-Morales, of Carmel. Both were charged Sunday with drug possession and conspiracy.
Prosecutors say the two were arrested on Friday after they picked up the dog crate at New York's Kennedy Airport. Hidden in the crate's false bottom was more than 22 pounds of heroin with a street value of more than $1 million.
It wasn't immediately clear if the suspects had lawyers who could comment. If convicted, they each face up to 20 years in prison.
