SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A 19-year-old man convicted of a 2014 gang-related killing of a Magna man faces up the life in prison.
A judge sentenced Joe Perez to 33 years to life after applying a weapons enhancement to Perez's first-degree felony murder conviction and imposing consecutive sentences on multiple convictions of other crimes.
A 3rd District Court jury in November convicted Perez in the shooting death of 40-year-old Carlos L. Martinez in front of his home on May 4, 2014.
The Salt Lake Tribune (https://goo.gl/LC7CJB ) reports that prosecutors said during the trial the shooting occurred the same day that Martinez and Perez argued and that Perez belonged to a gang and that Martinez formerly belonged to a different gang.
