JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — A federal magistrate has sentenced a couple who poached a bison inside Grand Teton National Park and then illegally drove an all-terrain vehicle off road to pick up its remains.
Authorities say in early December 2015, Gary Washington shot a bison a quarter mile past well-marked National Park Service boundary signs within the park. He was accompanied by his wife.
The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports (http://bit.ly/2h40HKe ) that Washington pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor Lacey Act charge, and his wife pleaded guilty to illegal take of wildlife.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Carman sentenced Washington to pay more than $8,000 in fines and fees, three years of unsupervised probation and a global hunting ban through 2017. His wife lost her hunting privileges also and three years of unsupervised probation.
