EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) — The Latest on the police shooting of a man in a San Diego suburb (all times local):

10:30 p.m.

Police say a black man shot several times by officers in a San Diego suburb has died.

El Cajon police released a statement late Tuesday night several hours after the shooting saying the man had been declared dead after he was taken to a hospital.

Police Chief Jeff Davis said at a news conference earlier in the evening that the man was not armed but had pulled an object from his pocket and pointed it in a "shooting stance" toward two officers. That prompted one of the officers to open fire.

The department released a photo still taken from a cellphone video of the moment and the man appears to have both hands on the object and to be pointing it toward one of the officers.

The other officer had been trying to subdue the man with a stun gun.

Police had received a call from a woman saying she was the man's sister and that he was acting strangely and was not himself.

The shooting spurred protests at the scene alleging police racism that lasted for several hours.

The police chief in a San Diego suburb says an unarmed black man shot by police had pulled an object from his pocket and pointed it in a "shooting stance" toward two officers.

El Cajon police Chief Jeff Davis said at a news conference Tuesday night that one of the officers had tried and failed to subdue the man with a stun gun before the other officer opened fire.

He would not say what the object was, but said investigators had recovered it.

Davis says the two officers were responding to a call from a woman saying she was the man's sister and that he was not acting like himself when they found the man behind a restaurant.

He would not give the man's name or say anything about his condition.

The shooting spurred protests alleging police racism both at the scene and outside the Police Department, forcing the chief to move the news conference indoors.

Police have shot and wounded a man they say was acting erratically in a San Diego suburb and an angry crowd has gathered, contending that the man was black and unarmed.

El Cajon police Lt. Rob Ransweiler says police were called to the parking lot of the Broadway Village Shopping Center shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday. He says police were told there was a man acting erratically, such as walking in traffic.

He says one officer apparently shot the man, believed to be about 30 years old, who was taken to a hospital. There's no word on his condition.

He declined to say whether the man was armed.

Other details of the confrontation haven't been released but a crowd of several dozen people gathered to condemn the shooting as unjustified.

No arrests have been made.
