BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The state of Vermont is holding onto student records from the now-defunct Burlington College, which for now comes at the expense of taxpayers.

The Burlington Free Press reports (http://bfpne.ws/2beHGgh ) taxpayer dollars are currently funding the move of about 17 filing cabinets from Burlington to the Vermont Agency of Education office in Barre.

Former president Carol Moore asked that the state become the temporary caretaker of the college's student records in May following news of the school's imminent closure.

Vermont Board of Education officials on Tuesday requested to take out $18,000 from the state general fund to restart the electronic systems that contain records for recent students. The money would cover past-due bills and licensing fees to the college's vendor.
