SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A primary election recount shows state Rep. Melvin Brown of Coalville has lost his re-election bid by nine votes to Morgan County Commissioner Logan Wilde.
Utah's elections office announced Wednesday that 64 ballots were disqualified because they were postmarked on election day, June 28. State law requires they be postmarked the day before.
The elections office says some ballots came from rural areas, where mail can be postmarked earlier in the day. The office says it's impossible for officials to determine if those ballots were dropped in the mail on election day or the day before.
Wilde says he's excited to now become the Republican nominee in the race against Democrat Cole Capener.
Brown told the Deseret News (http://bit.ly/2amyx50 ) that he's disappointed but concerned about voters being disenfranchised.
Brown served from 1987 to 2000 and was re-elected in 2007.
