WEST FAIRLEE, Vt. (AP) — A 12-year-old boy who nearly drowned after suffering a medical event while swimming last week in Vermont has died.
The Valley News (http://bit.ly/2atqCCX ) reports that the parents of Dylan O'Hearn said Friday their son was in the intensive care unit and wouldn't survive the "near-drowning incident" on the public beach in West Fairlee.
Officials say the family chose to remain at the hospital until Dylan could donate his organs.
Officials say the boy suffered a cardiac event while swimming in Lake Fairlee last Tuesday. He had an underlying heart condition called Long QT Syndrome, which can cause fast or erratic heartbeats.
