IDAHO CITY, Idaho (AP) — A wildfire burning north of Idaho City expanded to about 5.4 square miles by Sunday afternoon.

But the Idaho Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/29TMKLc ) that firefighters had the blaze about 29 percent contained thanks to weather conditions.

A U.S. Forest Service press release says lighter winds and lower temperatures offered crews better access to the fire's perimeter to create new lines and fortify existing ones.

Officials expect the favorable conditions to continue throughout the day.

Authorities expanded the closure area around the fire Saturday due to concern for public safety.

The fire started Monday and has 599 fire personnel working to contain it.

Firefighters are trying to protect the Elk Creek Watershed, the water source for Idaho City.
