PROVO, Utah (AP) — Utah County residents who oppose a proposed transit project say they will appeal to the Utah Supreme Court since their referendum petitions to block the bill were blocked.
Orem and Provo sent on Thursday alerted opposing groups that the petitions, although validated by the Utah County clerk with the number of names needed, would not be referred to the November 2017 ballot.
Both cities' councils approved signing lease agreements this spring that would allow the Utah Transit Authority, the Utah Department of Transportation and the transportation project team to begin construction on the 10.5-mile route formerly known as bus rapid transit.
Attorneys for both cities say the lease agreements are not referable for referendum.
