SPANISH FORK, Utah (AP) — A man who has spent more than three years in Utah County Jail on a mandatory immigration hold has been released.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/29v1jTw) that 51-year-old Martin Chairez-Castrejon was greeted by his family outside the jail Friday.
Chairez was granted release on $50,000 bond by an immigration judge last month.
His deportation proceedings, however, remain ongoing.
Attorney Skyler Anderson is hopeful that a new Supreme Court ruling will work in Chairez's favor.
Chairez, a lawful permanent resident from Mexico, has lived in the U.S. since he was 19.
In 2013, he was sentenced to 44 days in jail after pleading no contest to felony discharge of a firearm during a fight.
But the weapons offense led to his deportation case and him being held in mandatory detention.
