HANOVER, N.H. (AP) — Thousands of participants and volunteers will descend on Hanover, New Hampshire, for The Prouty cancer research fundraiser, which had a far less heralded beginning 35 years ago, when four nurses paid tribute to a patient who was dying of cancer.
Audrey Prouty lost her nine-year battle with ovarian cancer in August 1982, just days before four nurses at the Norris Cotton Cancer Institute who were inspired by her courage undertook a 100-mile bicycle ride through New Hampshire's White Mountains.
Patty Carney, Cindy Spicer, Heather Klassen and Catherine Shannon raised $4,000 for cancer awareness and sparked an annual fundraiser that has raised more than $26 million to date.
This year's fundraiser on Friday and Saturday is expected to draw more than 5,000 participants and 1,300 volunteers.
