LAS VEGAS (AP) — Crews are reporting progress containing a wildfire burning in a mountain canyon about 25 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.
The U.S. Forest Service said Monday the fire in Lovell Canyon was estimated to cover less than half a square mile. No injuries are reported and no structures are threatened.
Officials say the burn area is pinyon juniper, and the fire is about 35 percent contained.
Forest Service spokesman Ray Johnson says about 150 firefighters are at the scene about 4 miles off State Route 160.
The hamlet of Mountain Springs, about 5 miles away, and Torino Ranch summer camp about 7 miles away aren't threatened.
Johnson says foliage is exceptionally dry, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
He says it may be human-caused.
