HONOLULU (AP) — Athletes will get a little more money in the fall as the University of Hawaii boosts cost of attendance stipends by 62 percent.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/28VDtiy) the additional funding means the almost 250 athletes at the school will get $1,000 to $2,000 each to pay for expenses outside tuition, books, room and board.
The NCAA started allowing the stipends in fall 2015.
UH spent more than $256,000 on the stipends last year.
The school's total budget for stipends was roughly a fourth of the $1.1 million spent by Boise State last year.
Most of the university's teams compete in the Big West, where student stipends fell below Hawaii's.
Fundraising and donations account for almost 35 percent of the stipends that the University of Hawaii will pay this year.
