WATERBURY CENTER, Vt. (AP) — The deadline is fast approaching for rural libraries in Vermont and New Hampshire to apply for grants to increase their children's book collections and summer programming.
Wednesday is the deadline for applying to the Children's Literacy Foundation for grants to help boost summer reading and related programs.
The grants are geared to summer and fall programs that serve children up to age 12 who are at risk of growing up with low literacy skills.
The grants provide qualifying libraries with $2,000 to buy children's books and $500 to the local elementary school to buy new books.
Summer Readers grants are available to community organizations, summer schools, camps and other programs that support at-risk children during school vacation. The grants aim to sustain literacy skill levels and encourage reading for fun.
"We are seeking to partner with rural libraries, as well as a broad spectrum of community organizations who serve at-risk children both during the summer and throughout the school year," said the foundation's program manager, Jana Brown. "Strengthening the relationship between families and their local library and other community programs, and providing access to new, high quality books in the home helps families and communities make literacy a priority."
The Vermont-based Children's Literacy Foundation was founded in 1998 with the goal to instill a love of reading and writing among low-income, at-risk, and rural children in New Hampshire and Vermont.
