NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Students threw fake money at Yale President Peter Salovey during a forum to discuss the school's decision not to remove the name of a famous slavery advocate from one of its residential colleges.
Salovey announced this week the college would continue to carry the name of former vice president John C. Calhoun, but that two new residential colleges would be named for Benjamin Franklin and Pauli Murray, the co-founder of the National Organization for Women and a civil rights leader.
Students said they were expressing anger at Thursday's forum in part because Franklin's name had been suggested by a wealthy donor.
Several wore T-shirts with a photo of singer Aretha Franklin's image on it and the words, "We deserve a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T," a reference to one of her hits.
