MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Some Alabama voters head to the polls Tuesday for primary runoffs in two state school board races and other down ballot elections. Here's what to look for in Tuesday's election.
STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION
There are Republican party runoffs for two state school board seats.
Incumbent Matthew Brown faces Jackie Ziegler, the wife of state Auditor Jim Ziegler, in a runoff to represent south Alabama's District 1 on the Alabama state school board.
Brown, an engineer for the county highway department, was appointed by Gov. Robert Bentley to fill a vacant post in July. Ziegler is a former school principal. The winner faces Democrat Ron Davis in November. The district includes Mobile, Baldwin, Butler, Escambia, Conecuh and Crenshaw counties.
Board Vice President Jeff Newman is in a runoff with Jim Bonner for the school board's District 7 in northwest Alabama. The district includes Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Marion, Winston, Lamar, Fayette, Tuscaloosa, Walker and parts of Limestone and Jefferson County counties. Newman is a former Lamar County superintendent. Bonner taught career tech courses at community colleges for 30 years. There is not a Democrat on the November ballot.
