CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia State University says its capital campaign has surpassed the $18 million fundraising goal.
University President Brian Hemphill said Friday the school has raised $19.6 million for its "Realize the Promise, Deliver the Future" campaign, The Charleston Gazette-Mail (http://bit.ly/1qAaLdY ) reports.
The campaign brought in money for scholarships, academic programs, campus improvements and other projects.
University spokeswoman Kimberly Osborne says more than 2,700 people have donated.
The campaign started in 2010, before Hemphill became president, but he has been instrumental in raising support for the small university.
The campaign is scheduled to end in 2017.
Universities that complete a capital campaign early often raise the fundraising goal to continue momentum. Hemphill said WVSU already did that, two years ago, by increasing its original fundraising goal of $12.5 million.
