MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty in the fatal shooting of a Memphis police officer last year.
The Shelby County district attorney's office Monday filed notice of its intent to seek death in the sentencing phase of the trial of 30-year-old Tremaine Wilbourn, an ex-convict charged with murder in the shooting of Officer Sean Bolton.
Police say Bolton interrupted a drug deal in a 2002 Mercedes Benz on Aug. 1. Police say Wilbourn exited the car and confronted the officer, and they got into a physical struggle.
Authorities say Wilbourn took out a gun and shot Bolton eight times.
Prosecutors say Wilbourn fled the scene and carjacked a motorist as he got away. Wilbourn led officers on a two-day manhunt before turning himself in to U.S. marshals.
