LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas State Police says a trooper accused of striking a minor has been cited for third-degree assault.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1NrC1P7 ) that 47-year-old Trooper Sammy Koons has been on paid administrative leave since the incident occurred, and will remain off the job while the misdemeanor case is in court.

Koons, a 21-year veteran of the agency, is accused of confronting and striking a minor outside his West Memphis home on Sept. 19. State police said Koons was off duty at the time, and several youths had been outside of his home causing a disturbance.

The charge was filed on Thursday. State police spokesman Bill Sadler says prosecutors have sealed the case file because it involves a minor. Sadler says he does not know whether the victim was injured.
