COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi University for Women is beginning the second Jumpstart program in the state.
Site manager Rose Ford tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/1NANHWC) that the new chapter is targeting education majors, but is open to all volunteers. They're looking for about a dozen volunteers to start.
Jumpstart is a national organization that works to help kids in low-income neighborhoods enter kindergarten ready to succeed. It says children in low-income neighborhoods typically start kindergarten 60 percent behind their peers in more affluent communities.
The state's only current Jumpstart program is in its fourth year at the University of Mississippi. It has about 25 volunteers, plus staffers from the university and its Center for Excellence in Literary Instruction.
