SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — One of the country's six canine blood banks is located in Salt Lake City, and it's calling on dog owners in the area for help.
KSL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1llyHPs ) that dog blood is in high demand at veterinary clinics, and there's currently a nationwide shortage. Advanced Veterinary Care is calling on Utah pet owners to help fulfill the need.
AVC veterinary technician Kristalynn Hall says blood transfusions are part of the daily routine at the clinic's emergency room, but the demand nearly always outweighs the supply.
According to Hall, each dog donation could potentially save the lives of up to four other dogs.
Canine blood donated at AVC is shipped all over the country.
Dobermans, greyhounds, boxers and pit bulls are ideal donors because they have a universal blood type.
