FOX LAKE, Ill. (AP) — The latest on the fatal shooting of a police officer in northern Illinois (all times local):
11:45 p.m.
A county sheriff's spokesman says authorities are responding to a report of two "suspicious subjects" in a northern Illinois town near where a police officer was fatally shot.
Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Christopher Covelli says police officers with dogs are conducting systematic searches with air support Wednesday night in Volo.
Covelli says there's no evidence the scene is connected to the shooting of Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz in nearby Fox Lake. But he says: "Given the circumstances, we're taking it very seriously."
Authorities say Gliniewicz, a 30-year police veteran, was shot Tuesday morning while pursuing three suspicious men. A manhunt for the subjects has been ongoing since then.

Hundreds gathered at a park for a vigil in memory of a northern Illinois police lieutenant who was fatally shot in the line of duty.
Mayor Donny Schmit said Wednesday the death of Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz has left a hole in his heart.
The officer's widow, Melanie Gliniewicz, took to the stage in a Fox Lake park surrounded by her sons. She thanked the people attending the vigil and those offering their support and prayers.
Gliniewicz said her husband was her "best friend, my hero, the love of my life for the last 26 and half years."
A minister, Mike Johnson, said Gliniewicz died serving the community and was about helping others. He asked the crowd who among them would replace him.

Even with 100 investigators on the ground for a second day, authorities in northern Illinois acknowledge they have no indication that three suspects wanted in the gun-slaying of an officer are still in the area.
Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko says the officer provided no concrete description of the men he was pursuing on foot before he was shot, except to tell dispatchers that two of them were white and one was black. That has left investigators and members of the public trying to help them with little to go on.
Filenko told reporters Wednesday, however, that he felt they were making progress and were chasing down numerous leads, saying it only takes one tip to "break a case wide open."

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch has condemned the recent fatal shooting of police officers in Illinois and Texas, telling a housing conference in Washington that violence against "all of us, regardless of what uniform any of us wear" must end.
She's strongly condemned the "recent and brutal" killings, saying "our hearts are broken over this."
Lynch was referring to a series of highly public shootings nationwide in recent months affecting "all segments of our community."
She says it's a "sad fact now" that no one is safe.
She listed the shootings of attendees at a church Bible study in Charleston, South Carolina, moviegoers in Louisiana, military personnel in Tennessee and two television journalists killed on the air last week in Virginia.

Authorities say an intensive house-by-house "grid search" for three suspects wanted in the fatal shooting of a northern Illinois police officer has ended, but that the hunt continues.
Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli elaborated Wednesday on the change in tactics, explaining that the search is continuing in a broader area outside the initial two-square-mile search perimeter in Fox Lake.
He says local and state law enforcement officers are patrolling a wider zone to look for the suspects and investigate any suspicious activity. The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force has taken over the main investigation and is following leads.

Authorities in northern Illinois have expanded their search for three suspects wanted in the shooting death of a police officer.
Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli says local and state police have been conducting "saturation patrols" in the Fox Lake area since late Tuesday night when they exhausted a search of a tighter, two-square-mile perimeter.
Covelli says that besides catching the offenders, the heavy police presence is meant to reassure the community. Seven schools were closed Wednesday out of concern for children's safety.
