BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — A graduation rate that by one measure is the worst for a South Carolina public college is one of the top challenges confronting the incoming chancellor at the University of South Carolina Beaufort.
The Island Packet of Beaufort reports (http://bit.ly/1Djy2Xd ) that USC-Beaufort had the worst graduation rate in 2013 among the state's 12 public four-year colleges. Data compiled by The Chronicle of Higher Education lists just one in 10 full-time students who started at the school graduated from the campus in four years.
Outgoing chancellor Jane Upshaw says the yardstick isn't a fair comparison to other South Carolina colleges because the Beaufort school has only been offering bachelor's degrees for 11 years.
Upshaw retires after 12 years at the school's helm on Aug. 15 and being succeeded by Al Panu.
