AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Newly released records show the cash-strapped University of Akron has spent $950,000 on renovations to president Scott Scarborough's home.
The university announced earlier this week that it was eliminating 213 positions to help overcome a $60 million deficit. The school says the renovation of the president's residence was long overdue and represents a "20-year investment" to keep it up to standards.
The Northeast Ohio Media Group (http://bit.ly/1DgnffX ) reported Friday that it obtained records from the university detailing spending for major renovations of living areas and furnishings, including drapes and carpeting.
Scarborough was hired last year and is required by contract to live in the 29-year-old home. The university bought it for $850,000 in 1999 when Luis Proenza was named president.
